It seems every time we turn on the news there is another extremist attack! Following today’s tragedy in Istanbul we examine a very important question, should Muslims living in America be scared for their lives?
You have a Presidential candidate pledging that all Muslims oversees should be banned from coming to America. You have two very recent tragedies involving Muslims (Orlando shooting and now Istanbul). You even have people seeing therapists for Islamphobia.
Comedian Aziz Ansari wrote on the NY Times that he no longer wants his parents going to the mosque for fear someone will attempt a hate crime. Aziz also shared these statistics on the post: “There are approximately 3.3 million Muslim Americans. After the attack in Orlando, The Times reported that the F.B.I. is investigating 1,000 potential “homegrown violent extremists,” a majority of whom are most likely connected in some way to the Islamic State. If everyone on that list is Muslim American, that is 0.03 percent of the Muslim American population. If you round that number, it is 0 percent.”
His point was to make Americans realize that most Muslims living in America have nothing in common with these monsters committing these crimes. That they want the terrorism stopped just as much as any other American in America!
If you talk to most Muslims in America today they will tell you the following:
We fear turning on the news and seeing another Muslim commit a crime
We are afraid to go to the mosque to worship in fear of a hate crime
We feel like an outcast at work and or school
We do not support any terrorist
Americans need to not let the recent evens dictate how they perceive every Muslim in America and or the world.
